The oompas are putting themselves into the candy and escaping the factory as ghosts. They infuse themselves into the dreams of the children that eat this candy. They appear as strange notions, questions, unquenchable compulsions or commands.

To be fair I remember this being the theory when I obsessively watched a billion documentaries about this and traumatised myself as a kid worrying I'd burst into flame at any moment. One reason why I never smoke or drink.

I read a book on it decades ago that said that, they burned a pig carcass that way as proof. Don't get incapacitated where you might be set on fire, and you should be ok..

ridiculous. that's not spontaneous. that's just carelessness with ashes. that's a whole different thing than spontaneous human combustion. doesn't prove a thing.
